Event Details:
May 16, 2024, from 6-8pm
North Bend Senior Center
1470 Airport Lane, North Bend OR 97459

The park is located in the Airport Heights area of North Bend and is owned by the Coos County Airport District (CCAD). In 2022, CCAD signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Coos Bay-North Bend Rotary Club to revitalize the park that served the community for over 60 years. The park houses a playground, baseball field, sand volleyball tennis, and basketball court. Rotary is working with a park consulting firm, Groundworkshop out of Portland, to develop a master plan to guide the revitalization and redevelopment of the park for the next several years.

This first community meeting will allow citizens to meet the Groundworkshop and Rotary Parks Committee teams and help guide the park’s future. For more information visit the Rotary website www.coosbaynorthbendrotary.org or Coos Bay – North Bend Rotary on Facebook. The Coos Bay-North Bend Rotary Club has served the Bay area for over 100 years through community service projects. The organization comprises business leaders from the Coos Bay and North Bend area. The Memorandum of Understanding for the park is a long-term commitment to continue the work on creating better livability through healthy, outdoor activities and recreation, and to do this by focusing on the future, which is our youth, while providing access for all abilities.

The Coos County Airport District and the Coos Bay-North Bend Rotary Club hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking at the Airport Heights Park Playground to kick off a revitalization project. The park is located inside the property boundaries of the district and has been in place since the development of the neighborhood more than 40 years ago.

The two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding to rehabilitate the park using a multi-year phased approach. That work began with the addition of a swing set and multi-use Synergy Play System that is currently underway. Rotary has hired Ground Workshop to develop a master plan for the 13-acre park/recreation area. Ground Workshop is based out of Portland. The Principal-in-Charge, Tommy Solomon, has 17 years of experience in the design of community-supported open spaces and inclusive play environments.

The park currently includes an outdoor volleyball area, a basketball court, tennis courts, baseball fields, and a playground. While work is happening, portions of the playground area will be temporarily closed. The rest of the park and trails will remain open to the public.

Creating a master plan for the entire park area is expected to take several months. The public will have several opportunities to present ideas and offer input as options for the park are developed. Airport Heights Park is off Colorado Ave. near Airport Lane in North Bend, OR.
